1. Download or purchase a custom background 
2. Login to your Twitter account
3. Click Settings then go to the Design tab
4. Click Change Background Image at bottom
5. Then click the Choose File button
6. Choose the file you downloaded on step 1
7. Click Save...Done!

Getting a large following is very desirable right now due to many reasons; spreading your message, marketing, support, and sometimes cash money (fast cars, champagne, and yachts...sigh). Many ways are actually illegal on Twitter and can get you banned. The good honest way is to manage the hell out of your followers.
